A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck near Cedar City, Utah, around 11:30 p.m. Sunday night, according to the United States Geological Survey. The epicenter of the quake was about 19 miles southwest of Cedar City and about 233 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, according to the USGS. No damage or injuries were immediately reported. The USGS said the earthquake struck at a depth of about 19.6 kilometers, which is about 12 miles. There was light to moderate shaking felt in the area of the epicenter, with people as far north as Beaver, Utah, reporting having felt it. People as far southwest as Las Vegas reported some weak shaking. According to the USGS, there is not one magnitude above which damage will occur. It depends on other variables, such as the distance from the earthquake, what type of soil you are on, building construction, among others. However, the USGS says damage does not usually occur until the earthquake magnitude reaches somewhere above 4 or 5.
